How To Use The Chain Rule To Stop Feeling Overwhelmed & Set The Foundations To Make Rapid Progress In As Little As 10 Seconds

Know What?On most days…I am so focused that there’s barely any scope for feeling overwhelmed.Just recently I whipped out a 2100+ newsletter in 1 hour 11 minutes.That's 2-4x the speed of most digital writers.Translate that speed to any kind of work...Can you ever be overwhelmed if you got all your work done faster?Of course not.But I’m ngl…There are many things that have helped me...I would be lying if I said there’s one secret that’ll help you do the same.But… But…The Chain Rule has been the biggest game changer for me.It’s so simple… and yet it can destroy your overwhelm faster than Thanos’ snap destroyed half of the Universe (yes… I have watched Marvel a lot… call the Alpha police)Before knowing it, my life was a mess.More than often, I couldn’t even start working on a project.Not too long ago, I learned everything I could about starting an e-commerce brand…Studied for over a month… so much so that I can still give you a 24-hour lecture on how to build an e-commerce brand…Even had a friend make some real good designs…Only to never start because of how overwhelmed I felt.And even when I did start working on a project…I always ended up overwhelming myself.For instance…In early 2021 when I got serious about fixing my life...I got into the online business because you can’t fix your life and be broke at the same time.By the end of 2021, I was trying to:

  • Grow on Twitter, Instagram, and Telegram

  • Monetize all the platforms

  • Run a podcast

  • Create a blog

  • Write newsletters

  • Build digital products

  • Build promotional content

  • Learn to copywrite and get clients

  • Grow extra social media accounts as side-hustle

And probably a few other stuff.To those who think I was doing a lot…Just track & list everything you do in a day.You’ll realize you actually do a lot more tasks than you think.And for those who don’t think I was doing a lot…Lemme introduce you to the brainwashing done by colleges, your boss, & the hustle culture.This is where the real juice begins.So close all other tabs and stay focused.

The Brainwashed Lifestyle

What does a typical high school and college life look like?Classes. Homework. Tuition. Tuition homework. Projects. Preparation. 10 subjects. Clubs. Internships.As students, you simply rush from one thing to another.And you continue the same when you’re out in the real world.You get a job where you have to spend 12+ hours doing everything you’re asked to do.I personally know people who joined the corporate world hoping they won’t work much… only to work their ass off for an “employee of the month” award and a $100 bonus.Or you open up a business and want to do everything NOW (thanks to hustle culture).Anything less feels like you’re not giving your best.Even the web shows like Suits and movies like Wolf Of The Wall Street that we watch…They glorify the same rush.As the writer Ying Pueblo said:“In a society based on speed and productivity, moving slowly is a radical act”.For a long time, I thought this rush was normal… and that’s how good life is lived.I was convinced when Harvey Specter said:

And I understand that some people are naturally wired to live in that rush.But for the majority of us…We can’t constantly live in that rush without hating our life and feeling miserable.So we eventually have to slow down.BUT…Since we’re brainwashed to live in a rush… we continue to give ourselves a lot of work even after slowing down…And that’s what creates the feeling of overwhelm that slows our growth.So since we can’t sustainably increase our speed and maintain it…The obvious solution is to reduce work so you can work consistently.Right?Well, it’s not that simple.Because without prioritizing the right work when reducing tasks, you’ll simply waste time and destroy your growth.And to fix that is where the Chain Rule comes in.

The Chain Rule

There’s always a chain of projects and tasks that you have to execute in order.For instance…To open & run an e-commerce business, some of your projects will include:

  • Building a store

  • Running ads to get customers

  • Writing email sequences to turn customers into fans

And each of those projects will have multiple tasks.But…Writing email sequences is worthless if you don’t first run ads to get customers.And running ads to get customers is worthless if you don’t have your store set up.So, there’s a chain or sequence of tasks you have to execute in order.The problem is, you focus on the projects and tasks ahead in the chain without completing the ones before…That’s how you end up with a long list of unnecessary tasks that cause overwhelm and slow you down.And know what?The same goes for projects on a larger scale.To give you my example:I want to either start an e-com store or a physical business once I have the money to.I could easily waste time researching and studying about them both (that’s what a lot of people do).But I rather choose to focus on things that’ll help me save the necessary money (freelancing and monetizing my online presence). Because I’m following the chain.To give you another example:I have a lot of young people asking me where they should invest their $169 bucks.They even spend a lot of time learning about the stock market, mutual funds, and crypto… when they should be focused on having an investible amount of income every month.Now, here’s how you’ll be using the Chain Rule:

Application

Start focusing on the task & project that are first in the chain.But how to find the right task & project?In most cases, all you’ll really need is common sense and you’ll have your answer in 10 seconds.In other cases… buy a course (or find a mentor) and execute it step-by-step instead of consuming it all at once.After all, the course will be created by someone who has gone through the journey you want to go through.Simple as that.You can even use the same Chain Rule to make every task easier to execute.How?Instead of focusing on the entire task… break it down into steps… so you can follow the chain.For instance…I have a set of steps I follow to write every newsletter:

  • Research and braindump

  • Outline

  • Draft

  • Edit

Ever since I have been following this process… writing a newsletter has become 10 easier for me.You can do the same for almost every task.But remember one important thing:

While it helps to break the tasks into steps…DO NOT break your projects and goals into steps. This is where a lot of people go wrong.Simply focus on the 1st chain when working on projects… don’t create every other chain in advance… or in other words… don’t create a long detailed plan.Why?Because you’ll end up wasting time creating a long chain that’ll overwhelm you AND…There’s a high chance you’ll have to dump that long chain because execution often destroys plans… because what you think will happen is never what happens.So, remember to focus only and only on the first chain.And there you have it - The Chain Rule.Use it to pick the right project.Use it to pick the right task.And use it to make your tasks easier to execute.Do this and I can guarantee you won’t feel overwhelmed ever again & you'll get your work done faster.
